To The Cosmos by markkarvon To The Cosmos by markkarvon
Designed in the 1960s, the Soyuz spacecraft has been a mainstay of Russian space flight for the past 4 decades. With the retirement of the Space Shuttle, the Soyuz has become the primary vehicle in the world for manned space flight. Steadily upgraded through the years, the Soyuz TMA features glass cockpit displays and state of the art computer systems. With an unequaled record for safety and shear number of flights, the Soyuz is a remarkable piece of Russian engineering and truly a spacecraft for all mankind.

They still use this rocket today? I guess that's a fine example of not fixing what isn't broken, haha.

And people think that rockets and capsules like this one aren't capable of anything. Men have gone to the moon, space stations have been launched and maintained, and Man's entire space-based infrastructure was put in place using rockets and capsules, like the Soyuz, the Apollo, the Vostok, the Gemini, and all the rest of them.

Bleh.

Is the Soyuz still the ball-and-cylinder shape it was in the Cold War? Seems hard to find pictures of it. Oh, you should do that one spacecraft used for the Mars rovers, it's definitely an interesting design.

The Soyuz spacecraft looks much the same today as it did in the 60s. It has been significantly upgraded over the years with the latest avionics and many improvements have been implimented.

There's a lot of good that can be said about Soyuz, but I still like the Shuttle better. The shuttle is a real spaceship, everything other than it (LEM aside) are basically metal cans with astronauts inside. But the space shuttle is all that plus a cargo bay that allows it to capture and even return satellites, an airlock so it can continue operating normally, the crew not wearing spacesuits, while a spacewalker performs an EVA, and an aircraft-like design gives it a huge cross-range and allows it to land on a runway. Aside from this, the large internal volume means there's room for experiments with an unprecedented amount of control given to the astronauts.

Capsule, cheaper, gets people and supplies up and down.
Shuttle, more complex and expensive, but it's a real spaceship.

That's my critique of the Soyuz, not your piece! The work of art is really stunning! Is that really a painting??? You're sure that's not a picture? :D

Soyuz is a real spaceship. The STS is no such thing, but a surface-to-orbit and orbit-to-surface shuttle. The soyuz craft is designed specifically for operation in space, while the shuttle's airframe is almost entirely dead mass in LEO.

Then we have yet to build anything like that. I do hope we do it in the forseeable future tho. Z-Pinch fusion rocket powered ship on a manned mission to explore the outter solar system and Mars? Yes please. Prefferably with lots of landers and a centrifuge or two.

I meant "real" in the sense that it's more akin to what's seen more often in science fiction: spaceships with lots of internal space, airlock(s), cargo bay, etc. :p

I have a world view on space travel.
I really do think it is a disaster for space program to go into stasis at this point in time.

This is a great view of a launching Soyuz. Creation of such a piece is something I'd love to be capable of, and I agree that it was a major accomplishment.

Of course, both American and Soviet engineers had much to build on as others had done basic research.

The shame was that cold war made it impossible for the two great countries to work together.

Anyway, thanks again.
