The Southern Serves The South by markkarvon The Southern Serves The South by markkarvon
"The Southern Serves The South" was the slogan of the Southern Railway in the US. Here's my latest railroad piece. It depicts a Southern Railway Type Ps-4 Pacific locomotive. The Southern was reknowned for keeping their locomotives in pristine condition. Most railfans agree this was the most beautiful Pacific type locomotive ever made. I agree.

The green paint scheme was copied from the Southern Railway in England. The owner of the Southern Railway (US) made a trip to England and was so taken by the green paint scheme they used he implemented it on his railroad. It was an instant hit.

Of course the Southern Railway would keep their locomotives looking pristine, whether steam or diesel!  It's part of the Southern Gentleman's tradition to be looking your best when plying your trade! ^^  Presentation matters, and keeping your locomotive spitting clean, shined up enough to pass a military dress inspection, informs your passengers and freight customers that your railroad line is a truly professional operation, operated by persons who truly know their stuff and don't take service shortcuts.  Thanks for this!  I can see too this locomotive has the hallmark 'Southern Valve Gear' that eliminated the need for crosslinks that was about exclusive to the Southern Railway.

Looks like a 4-6-4. Am I right, or am I off target?

Your work is absolutely incredible. Some of it is so good that it takes a few moments to realize its art, not photography!
Absolutely spectacular work sir!

The PS4, like most USRA-inspired designs, are just basically handsome locomotives, but the green and gold adds that extra touch. I have seen the 1401 at the Smithsonian, but I wish she was alive again. A mounted dinosaur skeleton is impressive, too- but ; but at least we have film to remind us of what these machines looked like when they reigned. And our imaginations.

I'm mostly a "Narrow Gauge-er" but I will admit, that for a Standard Gauge locomotive, she IS the Best Looking!!! :D

Nice work. Although I've only seen 4501 on video, this is a fitting tribute to Southern's 4-6-2's.

As always, this is a remarkable painting - you are immensely talented! Your understanding of light, form and colour endowes your paintings with realism and depth.

I unfortunately have to disagree with your statement of the Ps-4 being the most beautiful 4-6-2 locomotive - I find the design cluttered and awkward. My vote for the all-time most beautiful pacific must hands-down go to the South African Railways class 16E (See here and here,
for example). A locomotive which is simultaneously much more muscular and elegant, with a pureness of design which almost brings tears to my eyes. They were the fastest steam locomotives operated on the SAR.

Again, allow me to say that your painting is absolutely amazing. The only thing that detracts is - somehow - the smoke. I wondered if you've tried different techniques to make it look a bit less "chunky" ? The shading and the texture somehow do not reflect the same realism as, for example, the green metal surface of your locomotive. Being a photographer, I however am not in a position to make any technical suggestions.

Thanks Dawid. The SAR Class 16E is certainly a beautiful locomotive. You may be right about the smoke. I'll have to work on my technique a bit.
