The Record Setter by markkarvon The Record Setter by markkarvon
The X-15 was designed to explore hypersonic speeds in excess of Mach 6 and altitudes over 300,000 feet. The aircraft was powered by a rocket engine dubbed "the million horsepower engine". There were three X-15 aircraft built. On August 22, 1963, flying the number 3 aircraft, pilot Joe Walker set a new altitude record of 354,000 feet.

Such altitudes are considered above Earth's atmosphere. For this reason many of the X-15 pilots were awarded astronaut pins.

Sadly, Joe Walker lost his life when the F-104 Starfighter he was flying collided with another high performance aircraft, the XB-70 Valkyrie. Both aircraft were lost.

I sell work through my own website, ebay store and authorized dealers. Probably the best place to see absolutely every print I sell is my website: [link].

Magnificent! This remarkable piece of technology accomplished such a feat comparable to Alan Shepard's first launch, that is a suborbital.

Boy, Mark did I ever screw up with my comment yesterday. Here' syour X-15 looking fabulous and it's right at the front of your gallery. Oye , am I ever embarrased!!! I must be getting senille!!! ...if only I could blame it on this...no such luck. I must very humbly admit to a plain old dumb screw up on my part.

Your work with each plane and piece is nothing short of outstanding and breathtaking, and I am forever humbled, awed, and inspired by each piece you do and such wonderful tribute and life you bring to each vehicle.
