The Legendary GG1 by markkarvon The Legendary GG1 by markkarvon
The Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 was an icon of railroading. The traction motor got itís power through pantographs which were raised to contact the 11,000 volt catenary which was strung above the track. There were 139 GG1 units built from 1934 to 1943. Styled by Westinghouse industrial designer Donald Roscoe Dohner and refined by famed designer Raymond Loewy, the GG1 was an attractive machine. The GG1 could generate up to 8,000 HP and was designed to pull passenger trains up to 100 MPH. Eminently reliable, the GG1 was popular with engineers, train crews and the riding public. She enjoyed a long service life with the Pennsylvania Railroad as well as with its Penn Central, Conrail, Amtrak successors. The last GG1 retired from service by New Jersey Transit in 1983. Several units are preserved in museums around the country. So beloved and remarkable was the GG1 that the preserved prototype unit was designated an Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark in 1983.

Why is the RED one in front?
Like the angle of this, makes them look more sleek.

yes. I feel the same way about the old E and F units the Chicago & North Western and Burlington used to use in Chicago commuter service.

I live in West Philadelphia, when growing up in my old neighborhood,I lived right next to the rails. As a kid ,I enjoyed looking at the last of the Steam locomotives, the GM diesels, like the F9 and the GGs. They were really impressive and were a one of kind machine. You captured it's likeness to a tee. They built those workhorses in Chester,Pa. too. It's successor was an Electric loco too,but it was long and rectangular,I don't recall the model type though. This is a favorite, great work...

I always loved these engines. I finally got to see one in person in 2011, it was still quite impressive, even in its sad sort of state. This is a great piece, it does the engines justice very nicely.

You just keep getting better. Of all the images of art deco design, this magnificent instrument of artistic utility come right to my own thoughts when I consider the subject. Seeing one in person--I've been privileged--only confirms that admiration. I also want to compliment you on your brilliant choices of subjects for your superlative art.
