Semper Paratus by markkarvon Semper Paratus by markkarvon
The HH-65 “Dolphin” is one of the mainstays of the US Coast Guard's Search and Rescue force. This versatile helicopter has proven itself well adapted to the role. Stationed throughout the coastal United States, the Dolphin and her her crews are called upon numerous times each year to rescue those in trouble at sea. In any weather and at any time the men and women of the US Coast Guard unselfishly brave the most perilous of conditions so that others may live. This dramatic print depicts the “Dolphin” in the act of rescuing a sole survivor in the water and is named after the Coast Guard motto, "Semper Paratus" - "Always Ready".

This is truly an honor to all ASR personnel. My Father was crew chief on a Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina in the ETO during WW2. His Canadian built Catalina/Casino was named "Miss Pick-Up" with a Vargasesque nose art to match. Though painted in Coastal Command livery she had U.S.A.A.F. markings. The plane picked up airman from both sides of the war, and worked in partnership with an RAF Thornycroft 67' Air/Sea Rescue launch. Great work!

I think I recall 6552 being at AirSta New Orleans in 1988.
At that time it was a pilots dream and a mechanics nightmare.
I was on the mechanic side, but they fixed a range of issues.
But as aircrew, she was fast and smooth, at that time the only CG helo with airconditioning.

My dad was a Coastguardsman. He died in February this year. I don't have adequate words to describe how much this makes me think of him. He would've loved it. Thank you.

"Can you lay your life down, so a stranger can live? Can you take what you need, but take less than you give? Could you close every day without the glory and fame? Could you hold your head high when no one knows your name? That's how legends are made - at least, that's what they say."

Thanks for that great tribute! My favorite middle school teacher is a retired USCG Captain/OF-6, and he was a helicopter pilot when he was active (I think he flew the HH-3F/Pelican, though). His example inspired me to apply for OCS. If I'm lucky enough to make the cut, I'll go in after I earn my M.S. in biology next year - but that 10% admission rate looks scary!

Semper Paratus!

"We say goodbye, but never let go. We live; we die, 'cause you can't save every soul. Gotta take every chance to show that you're the kind of man who will never look back, never look down, and never let go." - Bryan Adams, "Never Let Go" (Theme from the 2006 film, "The Guardian" )

My dad used to fly in these (HH65A though, in the white paint scheme). I have early memories of these flying over the house with him leaning out of the door waving. :D

A shout out to our brothers in the coast guard! You have just as shitty a job as we do and get half the credit. Funny thing is, when civvies go down in the water, everyone starts wishing they were better to the heroes on the way to save them. An incredible picture, friend. Semper Paratus indeed :)

I wonder what does it like to be out in the sea like this. With no coast to see and no hint of a hope to be saved.

And then you see this angel and you know that it's send for you. That must be like the happiest moment of a life.

Back to real:

Is the heli red so as to contrast with the blue sky and people could see it from afar?

Amen. I imagine they do paint them a bright color so they are visible in all kinds of weather conditions.

first off ur stuff is amazing. second, have you every tried doing something completely from your imagination? sci-fie? or fantasy? cos you've obviously got the skills, why not try flaunting some creativity too?

I think about doing sci-fi all the time. I've had a scene from the Walter Jon Williams cyberpunk classic "Hardwired" in my head for quite some time now. Maybe one day...

Amazing creation. It looks so realistic. I love the smoke, (though for the picture it makes sense, logically I would think it would have spread more) and maybe I'm seeing things but the water to the right looks like its artificially green, something I remember fighter pilots having so they could be located (not sure how well it would work in these storm sea conditions though). Again, amazing job.

The smoke from a flare would normally be trailing out in a line with the wind. The rotor wash has pushed it back into the cloud-like shape.

The light green touch on the wave is an old seascape painter's trick to show transparency at the top of the wave. The glow from the chopper's lights backlights the wave at that spot making it appear light green.

A trick of great painting is to include just a small and maybe slightly unexpected touch of complimentary color to supliment the main subject. That touch of light green color at the top of the wave serves such a purpose. It's those kinds of touches that make a painting "sing".

I'm assuming you did this on the computer, what program did you use? (not that I would be able to even come close)

Nice job for putting so much thought into that, because now that you mention it, the smoke does make sense. And I never knew that about painting the sea or painting in general. Thanks for the detailed response, I appreciate it. :)

I use Corel Painter and Adobe Photoshop. I do all my work with a Wacom Graphire4 tablet.

I have to put alot of thought and research into every piece. My main clientelle are the men and women that work with these machines every day.
