Artist's Comments

I've wanted to do a little something new with my earlier rendition of the Corsairs from VF-17. I think the main aircraft of VF-17 top ace Ike Kepford works nicely as a solo aircraft.

The piece is available through my website as an Open Edition Giclee in both 16" x 24" and 11" x 14" sizes.

I have also used the painting as one of the designs in my new Warbird Collection of T-shirt designs available through Karvon Graphics.

I'm wondering whether ever you'll do a plane of the axis sometime as well, such as Hartmann's 109 or Rudel's Ju 87 etc. Or are you not that much into those? :)

If I had more time I might do a few of the axis machines. The problem is I am usaually booked solid with commission work. This piece actually eveolved from an earlier commissioned piece. I have had a bit of free time the past couple of months but I have been using that free time to do a couple of armor pieces.

I am definitely more partial to the allied equipment but I also love the German equipment from the War. If I had to choose a fighter I think I like the FW190 better than the BF109 though. My favorite German aircraft would have to be the He219. Eventually I hope to do at least those two.

I have no plans to do Hartman's 109. It has been done so many times by many of the best aviation artists. I like to choose stuff that is a little more original. Less competition and it sells better.

I also like the experimental "Luft '46" stuff. Such fantastic designs. I started a Ta183 a while back but I haven't done anything with it.

The problem is the axis stuff doesn't really sell that well to my normal clientelle. I am in the business of selling art and it is hard to justify a month's worth of work just to have a pretty picture.

Ah, I understand, I probably don't really realize that you do mostly comission work, due to the fact that I don't do anything that sells :XD:

You're right about the 190 being superior to the 109, but just like with the 219, the big heads always seemed to overlook truly superior fighter and bomber designs for some reason. I guess that's a good thing though, I don't want to know what would've happened if the axis won the war...

And yeah, the more advanced designs are very interesting, though most of them never saw action, the Me 163 or 262 actually flew, though again, too few to have any impact on the war. Still, it's fascinating to see how technology developed during some of humanity's darkest times, and how we all benefit from these developments today. Kinda reminds me of the president's speech in "Armageddon" :XD:

I know there is a strong following and market for the axis aircraft, I just haven't gone after it yet. It is terribly oversaturated with works by real masters like Robert Taylor and company. It is very hard to compete in that crowd. They have the signatures of the pilots on every print they release. I have very little hope of ever getting a signature of one of the great German pilots.

Still, I do want to do an FW190. It is such a fine looking airplane. I bought a really great book on the type last year with hopes of doing a painting featuring that aircraft.
