Charlie Brown Comes Home by markkarvon Charlie Brown Comes Home by markkarvon
Apollo 10 was the last dress rehearsal before the first lunar landing. With the call signs of “Charlie Brown” for the Command Module and “Snoopy” for the Lunar Module, the combined spacecraft were the second manned mission to orbit the moon. Thomas Stafford, John Young and Eugene Cernan tested all the procedures and the performance of the spacecraft without actually performing a lunar landing. The Lunar Module was flown for the first time in lunar orbit and came within 8.4 miles of the surface. On the journey back to Earth, the spacecraft gained speed under the influence of the planets gravity. By the time “Charlie Brown” reached the reentry point, the crew was traveling faster than any human being had ever traveled before. As of 2012, Apollo 10 still holds the record for the fastest manned flight at 24,816 MPH.

Edit: Added lens flare.

Theres so much to love here, outstanding not just for the colors
and the "next best thing to being there" realism but also for
the technical accuracy. Instant fave!

Looks wonderful! I don't really see anything bright enough for lense flare, but I could be wrong.

Superb detail and the vivid palette is wonderful! I was one of those kids glued to the TV, too, back then. Amazing, daring acts of adventure were happening so fast, I thought surely I'd be able to go to the Moon in my lifetime. Now I'd been overjoyed if ANYBODY goes back in my lifetime...

I remember this. There were jokes that if the Soviets had orbited something around the moon, "Snoopy" could meet the "Red Baron". Nicely done.

As always top drawer art work Mark, another great subject with a wonderful history lesson and I too must confess to eagerly waiting in front of the TV waiting for news from space! =D

Just another masterpiece. I've occasionally joke-wondered about them telling NASA to 'screw it' and going ahead and landing on the moon! I've been told many times it wouldn't have worked.

Thank you very much. They did not have enough fuel in the LM on this flight to make a landing and take off again. There were other technical issues that had not been fully worked out with the computer programs that would also have made an attempted landing very hazardous.
