Against All Odds by markkarvon Against All Odds by markkarvon
Union Pacific's Big Boy locomotive is legendary. A true icon from the days when steam power on the railroad was at its pinnacle. When diesels took over all the Big Boys were retired to museums or sold for scrap. Generatins of rail fans who never knew what it was like to experience Big Boy in operation first hand will now get that chance. Union Pacific has a long a proud tradition of mainline steam operation and Big Boy #4014 will join the stable. Well done UP!

4014, when its fully fixed up in a few years, will also be UP's MOST POWERFUL locomotive again, BAR NONE.  There have been many attempts to match the BB's ultimate hauling capacity, and they worked for a time, but being electric traction, they all needed additional help to run at SPEED like the Big Boy could.  Diesels today RARELY have more than 4500 horsepower because beyond that, reliability goes off a cliff and at 5000+ to 6000 horsepower in a single engine, a diesel locomotive is running itself at the ragged edge of tearing itself to pieces.

Going by UP's tonnage ratings for Big Boy from Cheyenne to Laramie via the 0.8% grade Track 3 of 5,650 short tons, Big Boy could haul that 5,600 short ton train at 37 mph, which the math computes out to a STAGGERING 9000 horsepower!  It's gonna be good to see 4014 for publicity purposes hopefully haul such a mega-load as that from Cheyenne to Laramie possibly as part of the celebrations of the 150th Anniversary of the First Transcontinental Railroad! ^^

Guess what: the picture title was TRUE. 4014 IS coming back to the rails as a oil-burner.;) (Wink)

If you mean mug, I am the artist who did the artwork for the manufacturer/distributor. They actually licensed four of my railroad designs back in 2007 I believe. My signature should be visible on the artwork.

You painted this picture? Wow! It looks just like the actual locomotive. I for one can't wait to see that locomotive return to steam. Good work on the picture and well done UP for getting 4014 back. :)

I guess Jim Boyd was right when he wrote in Outbound Trains that a Big Boy would run again, simply because it's there.

I can't wait until UP rolls this thing through the KC area. Foamers will be out like piranhas for miles.

As always, your photorealism in your compositions is unreal. I have real photos that don't look this good.

Beautiful work Mark! Who would have thought that we would have a replica of the Titanic being built and a Big Boy restored to operating condition??!! Some dreams can come true.

I'm looking forward to two locomotive debuts over all others: Big Boy 4014 and ALCO PA-4 NKP 190.  I fully intend to fly (or rail it if possible) to Portland to see NKP 190 ply the rails again.

Yeah those are both iconic machines. I am also looking for war to Norfolk & Western #611 returning to the rails.

Indeed.  I donated five bucks to that cause.  I'll celebrate the day the 611 and the SP 4449 meet up.  Those engines would look awesome side by side!

A certain German dictator refused to believe such a train could exist and even if it did there no chance Americans could build it.

It makes for an interesting thought but I think the Germans were very much aware of the capabilities of American railroad engineering and that of many other countries around the world. Similarly configured mallet type locomotives had been around for along time by the time WWII took place.

I used to climb all over the one at the Forney Transportation museum... What a behemoth!  It will be something wonderful to see one of them alive and moving, I wonder if they're going to restore the one I think is at Steam Town?  Your pictures continue just superlative, the color on this one and the sense of power and motion is just incredible.

I would also love to see an Allegheny operate, someday.  Then... We do a tug of war with the Big Boy AND SETTLE IT!
