ATSF No. 2903 by markkarvon ATSF No. 2903 by markkarvon
A 4-8-4 "Northern" type locomotive, #2903 was among the Santa Fe Railroad's famous "2900" class. Built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during World War II they were the heaviest "Northern" type locomotive ever built weighing in at over 510,000 lbs. This due to the limited availability of lightweight materials during the war.

The locomotive is traditional pencil on paper; the border and railroad's herald were added in photoshop.

This is one of my all-time favourite US steam locomotives! If I may add to your description, I believe this is the heaviest non-articulated steam locomotive (regardless of wheel arrangement) ever made.

I love your technique, but I can't help but wonder if your brightly coloured, bold frames don't overwhelm the pencil sketches a bit? Have you tried a more minimalist frame (to do the sensitive image justice).

I sketch now and then, but after seeing your work, I am glad I have never posted them! (I'll stick to photography...)

Thanks David.

Yes, I actually have updated the framing of all my locomotive drawings since they were originally posted. (I've posted the latest iteration.) I've experimented with various framing ideas over the years in an effort to make the image more saleable. Folks don't seem to go for b&w too much.

I think you're right about the 2900's being the heaviest. Beautiful Baldwin brutes!

Do you sell prints of the drawings, then? And does the frame posted here mirror how you have physically framed them?

Yes, I do sell prints. The image posted here is exactly what the print looks like. No physical framing is shown.
